Frederick II (King of Sicily, 1198–1250; King of Germany 1212-1220; Emperor 1220-1250)

Grosso da 4 denari imperiali in the name of Frederick II. Bergamo Republic (13th century), AR 1.25 g. (slightly ‘scodellato’). FREDERI/CVS – IMPRI Laureate bust r. based on the model of the gold augustalis of Messina and Brindisi (issued from 1231); six pointed star above. Rev. (Vertically) PGA – MVM (P with horizontal bar for PER) Church façade surmounted by cross with two towers at sides, and three arches above rocks (synthetic image of Bergamo ‘alta’); pellets at side of rocks, star above right tower; the reverse is double struck so to alter the image of the architecture, showing three instead of four arches. For the presence of the stars this issue can be dated 1254-56, after Frederick’s death.
