Perkins, Fairman & Heath, The World's First Steel Engraved Advertising Banknote. England and the United States, ND (ca. 1821), 1 Pound, Advertising note for Preventing forgery of banknotes, Intaglio printed in black on the face and blue on the back, Standing allegorical Brittania in middle flanked by cherubs on top, Mercury and helmeted figure on left and right and small figures on the sides, back has cherubs on top and bottom with a woman's profile in the 4 corners and ornate cycloid engraving. AU to Uncirculated condition, Perkins, Fairman & Heath, located at 69 Fleet Street, 186 Fleet street was down the block, they were well known for their meat pies and haircuts. In 1819 Jacob Perkins and Gideon Fairman moved to London from the U.S. in 1819 and soon joined with Charles Heath. The company is best known for printing the first postage stamp, the Penny Black for England in 1840. Perkins and Fairman produced the first steel plate engravings for banknotes in the U.S. and then after a few years producing notes in the U.S., they moved to England. Rare and historic advertising banknote.
