CHINA. Pattern K'uping Tael Struck in Gold, CD (1906). Tientsin Mint. NGC MS-63.
Fr-1; L&M-1023; K-1540; KM-Pn301; Wenchao-pg. 46#8 (rarity four stars); Chang Foundation-pg. 22#5. Plain edge. Three at this level, with three finer (MS64) at NGC and PCGS. Created by the Ministry of Revenue at the Tientsin mint in 1906 during the 32nd year of the reign of Guang Xu of the Qing Dynasty. Struck in 98% pure gold on an experimental basis and as patterns only. Never released into circulation, the plans to issue gold coinage in units of one Tael for circulation never materialized due to China's lack of gold reserves along with their defacto adoption of the silver standard. Boldly struck with bright exuberant luster and sharp rims. Delightful greenish gold coloration consistent with the alloy it was struck in. One of the great rarities of Chinese numismatics, the piece offered here for your consideration is one that will bring unmatched pride of ownership, and is sure to enhance the prestige of the collection it joins. NGC MS-63.
