Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1818/7 So-FJ MS62 PCGS, Santiago mint, KM78, Onza-1362 (listed as 1817/2/3). Brilliant and fully lustrous Mint State with sharply defined details and minor surface abrasions on the obverse preventing a higher designation. A clear 1817/8 overdate thus undoubtedly struck in early 1818 by the Republicans using colonial dies (they had taken control of the mint as early as 1817) originally dated 1818 and repunched with the 7 in the date since the use of colonial dies dated after 1817 was deemed unacceptable (hence the frozen 1817 date for the minor gold coins struck with colonial dies until 1827). A scarce variety for the type, very desirable in this flashy preservation.

Estimate: 2500-3000 USD
