DANUBE REGION. The Eravisci. Ansali (ca. 1st century BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.27 gm, 12h). Bearded male head right, head bare, wearing torque / Rider galloping left, holding round shield, ANSALI below. Freeman 19/R. CCCBM I 265. Rare. Medium toning with blue iridescence. Old scrapes on reverse. Good Very Fine. This unusual type is the most enigmatic of all Eravisci types, and perhaps the only example of a ruler portrait in the series. The reverse inscription ANSALI is probably the name of a local Celtic chieftain and his torc-adorned portrait is perhaps depicted on the obverse.
