DANUBE REGIION. Uncertain tribe. Ca. 100-50 B.C. AR tetradrachm, (24mm, 12.60 gm, 6h). Kroisbach type variant. Celticized male head left (Cobannus?), long hair shown in multiple parallel waves / Crested rider on horseback left; below, ground line composed of twisted torques. Demski –, cf. 1396. Freeman & Sear FPL 11, 3 (same dies). CNG 72, 25 (same dies). A lovely specimen of this fascinating type, boldly struck and lightly toned, minor reverse discoloration. NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5.This remarkable type, which appears as a unique creation as opposed to the usual imitative Celtic issues, bears a distinctive male head on the obverse that undoubtedly represents a Celtic deity, perhaps Cobannus, a youthful god of war and the forge often identified with Mars, known from statues and inscriptions found in France and Switzerland. The reverse appears to depict a large-headed Celtic deity emerging from the back of the horse. The lore of the horse and its close affinity to mortal humans and gods is a strong theme running through Celtic art.

Estimate: 2500-3500 USD
