LYDIAN KINGDOM. Croesus (ca. 561-546 BC). AV 24th stater (7mm, 0.40 gm). Sardes (?), heavy series, ca. 561-539 BC. Confronted foreparts of lion (on left, facing right, its paws extended) and bull / Incuse square, divided by vertical line. Cf. Berk 14 (undivided incuse square). Cf. CNG 90, lot 609 (same). Extremely rare denomination, apparently unrecorded with divided incuse, and undoubtedly the finest specimen extant. An exquisite piece, deeply struck, lustrous, and displaying unprecedented detail.
