Draped bust of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus, caduceus at shoulder; above, Γ / C· MAMIL on left, LIMETAN (TA ligate), Ulysses walking right, holding staff and extending hand to his dog Argus on ground before him. Crawford 362/1. Sydenham 741. RSC Mamilia 6. Well centered and deeply struck on an exceptionally broad flan. NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5.This wonderful reverse type depicts the moment when Ulysses, disguised as a beggar, finally reaches home after his ten years of wondering, and his dog Argus instantly recognizes him. Anyone who owns a pet dog will surely sense the pure excitement of the animal that the engraver has captured on this particular reverse die.
