Gaius 'Caligula' (AD 37-41), with Divus Augustus. AR denarius (18mm, 3.47 gm, 7h). Lugdunum, AD 37-38. C CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR POT COS, bare head of Caligula right / Radiate head of Divus Augustus right between two stars. RIC 2. RSC 11. BMCRE 4. Areas of surface porosity, otherwise Nearly Extremely Fine. This denarius is notable for the joint depiction of the emperor Gaius Caligula and his maternal great-grandfather, the deified Augustus. In an attempt to win public approval, Gaius 'Caligula' tried to distance himself from the memory of Tiberius, his uncle and despised predecessor. Instead, he emphasized his connection to the favorable memory of Augustus. How effective this campaign was with the general public is difficult to determine, as contemporary historians reflect the aristocratic view of him as capricious, bloody-minded and finally insane.
