Netherlands East Indies
Dutch Colony - United East India Company Ducaton 1739 AU Details (Polished) NGC, Dordrecht mint (Holland), KM71, Dav-417, Sch-28b (RR). Reeded edge. Perhaps best termed a presentation issue for the year, with a "fine style" execution not commonly seen, showcasing impressive central detail that remains consistent through to the sharply segmented coarse outer reeding on a perfectly round flan. Lightly polished at one point over centuries of cabinet storage, but given the natural reflectivity in the fields, as well as the acquired tone on both sides, it does little to diminish the overall appearance. For the sake of full disclosure, we note an example from these same dies, cataloged as Extremely Fine, selling for £8000 in a March 2015 Spink sale. Before that, we can only reference a single offering from these dies that brought $4,600 hammer in a 2002 Goldberg sale.
Estimate: 2500-3500 USD
