Republic Rosas gold 8 Escudos 1842-R XF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, La Rioja mint, KM14, Onza-1575, CJ51. A wholesome and attractive coin, well detailed with contained high-point wear, some luster remaining in the recessed areas and only mild cleaning evidence in the fields. Although some issues may be actually rarer, few other Latin American onzas are as iconic and desirable as this very rare one-year type. Despite the slight shortcomings noted on the insert, the present coin appears a fully presentable example among the few offered in the past 25 years, with only the ex-Millennia and perhaps the ex-Ulex coin clearly superior to it, as noted following:- the ex-Casterline specimen (Superior 05/1989, lot 7876) is the coin plated in the Onza reference work and appears similar in detail, with a few flaws. It was last offered as lot 20390 in our 1/2010 sale and certified XF40 NGC.- the ex-Ulex coin (Stack's1/2004, lot 198) was described as "Extremely Fine", with a small edge bump. - the ex-Eliasberg coin (first offered as lot 1011 in the ANR 4/2005 sale) is tooled in the fields.- lot 1077 in the Stacks 1/2010 sale (misdescribed in that catalog as the Eliasberg specimen, yet clearly a different coin) was described as "repaired". - the Millennia collection example (Goldbergs 5/2008, lot 3424 for $77,500) is certified MS62 NGC and probably the only Mint State example extant. As noted, a fully desirable example of this legendary coin thus a true prize among the Latin American series.

Estimate: 25000-30000 USD
