Victoria 50 Cents 1894 MS64 PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM6. This late-series issue had a miserly mintage of only 29,036 pieces according to Charlton, the second-lowest of the entire series behind the vaunted 1890H issue. There are actually fewer examples of the 1894 certified in circulated grades at PCGS than of the 1890H, although in Mint State the relations are reversed; that is, there are a few more Mint State examples graded of the 1894 than of the 1890H. (We note that the PCGS-certified population is not necessarily representative of the entire population). In any event, only a single piece has been certified by PCGS in MS65 (sold by Heritage in our 2010 sale of the Canadiana Collection), and a mere two in MS64. We have to admit that this example is a much more visually appealing piece than the Canadiana MS65 piece, with bold strike, full, bright luster and just a hint of golden patina. One of the conditionally very rare Canada 50 Cent issues, this piece is near the pinnacle of the finest known issues.

Estimate: 30000-35000 USD
