Costa Rica
Central American Republic 8 Reales 1831 CR-F XF45 NGC, San Jose mint, KM22. Wholesome for the designation with the expected limited high-point wear and pleasant surface quality. Struck over an 8 Reales coin dated 1819 or 1812 (more likely) previously countermarked with a crown (that punch fully visible under the range of mountains on the obverse). Murillo cites evidence that 8 Reales of the Colombian "Libertad Americana" type of 1819-1820 were countermarked in July of 1822 to authorize their circulation in Costa Rica. It is conceivable that these were later overstruck when the first official coinage was issued in San Jose in 1831. Obviously very rare and a most interesting piece among the early Costa Rican issues of the Central American Republic type.Ex. Mayer Collection. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I
