Central American Republic gold 4 Escudos 1835 CR-F AU55 NGC, San Jose mint, KM16, Fr-2. A charming coin for the assigned grade, with attractive orange toning and good detailing throughout despite the often encountered slightly soft strike in the centers. Surfaces remain substantially lustrous and surface handling marks are within the confines of the designation, with two small pinscratches before and after CENTRO on the obverse the most noticeable. Overall an eminently collectible specimen of this elusive issue, decidedly rare in this quality with only two examples currently ranking higher in the NGC census. Note that the often quoted mintage of 697 pieces for this date is mistaken since that figure corresponds only to the coins struck in 1835, to which the amount (2,166 pieces) of coins struck in 1836 (yet bearing the same 1835 date) must be added: the correct mintage for the 1835 date is therefore of 2,863 pieces, still a scant figure by any standard for comparable issues of the period. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I
