Central American Republic gold 4 Escudos 1849 CR-JB AU50 NGC, A well detailed and preserved coin, attractive for the assigned grade with slight high-point wear, limited, non-distracting handling marks and strong mint luster throughout. The small flaw noted on the sunface was evidently part of the die since it was also present on all three other specimens seen by the cataloguer: the Norweb coin (Christie's Dallas 5/1985, lot 479), the Eliasberg example (ANR 4/2005, lot 1679) and a silver trial strike or pattern (Kunker 1/2015, lot 777). The present coin and the aforementioned ex-Norweb piece are the two finest examples noted of this date while the Eliasberg coin still hammered for $13,000 despite having been previously mounted. Extremely rare and the key date of this popular type with perhaps 5 known examples, a well-pedigreed coin worthy of the strongest consideration from the connoisseur of the challenging Costa Rican series. Ex. Caballero de las Yndias (Aureo 3/2010, lot 2214 for $20,660 plus commission). From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I

Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
