Republic Type I countermark ND (1841) over Peru 8 Reales 1834 LM-MM VF20 NGC, San Jose mint, KM24. Under coin good Fine, countermark Very Fine. An extremely rare punch variety for the Carrillo star, with only two other examples of this variety known to the cataloguer: a 1818 Durango 8 Reales and a 1838 Lima North Peru 8 Reales (Renaissance Auctions 12/2000, lot 872). There remains the fascinating possibility that this variety constitutes a (extremely rare as such) contemporary counterfeit variety since the piercing on both this and the aforementioned example over a Durango war of Independence 8 Reales appears slightly larger. In any case, an important and very desirable variety for the specialist in this most challenging series. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part I
