Gibraltar
British Colony Type IV countermark 10 Bits ND VF35 NGC, KM20 (under Martinique), Prid-16 (under Dominica). Base coin Very Fine and attractive, countermark Extremely Fine. A Mexico 8 Reales 175I Mo-MF centrally pierced from the obverse with a heart-shaped hole with patterned border on the cut edges. Recent research by Bob Lyall indicates that the type I and II heart-shaped piercings are definitely from Gibraltar whereas the origin for the type IV pierced coins was still subject to debate. The cataloguer of the Roehrs collection was of the opinion that "Gibraltar is the origin for all of the types" and this seems the prevailing opinion in the numismatic community. In any event, a wholesome and unusually well preserved example of this rare holey dollar issue, rare in any grade and particularly desirable in this quality. From the Coin Cabinet of Isaac Rudman
