Charles I gold Unite (20 Shillings) 1643 AU50 NGC, Oxford mint, S-2734 (incorrectly marked on insert as 2743), Fr-259. A splendid example with mellowed, golden color and a mixture of both darker tone and russet highlights that cling to the devices. This specimen features the shorter, armored bust of Charles holding a sword and olive branch, with the denomination of 20 Shillings notated as XX to his right. The reverse depicts the 'Declaration' in three lines on a continuous scroll with three plumes above and the date below. While there are areas of softness noted within the legends and on the date, the overall design elements are phenomenal, with the portrait of the King fully-struck and impeccably detailed. The surfaces, too, are wonderfully preserved and extremely pleasing with no discernible imperfections. Unlike the typically encountered issues of this type which were poorly-struck, this offering is particularly attractive for its unusually roundish flan. An important piece of historical coinage struck during England's Civil War, incredibly scarce and highly-coveted in this deluxe quality.
