George II gold 1/2 Guinea 1745 AU58 NGC, London mint, KM580.2, Fr-348, S-3684. 'LIMA' issue; intermediate laureate head. Supremely lustrous and lightly toned, this popular and scarce piece possesses only a hint of wear on the highest points. Its sharp and blazing nature conveys the appearance of a higher grade. Furthering its charm, it is struck from the famous bullion plundered from the Spanish off the Philippine islands by Admiral Anson. As the contents of the booty comprised nearly entirely of silver, very few issues in gold were struck, bearing the LIMA hallmark as a mocking jest at the original location of the Spanish colonial mining site in Peru.Ex.
