Great Britain
George II gold 5 Guineas 1746-LIMA AU58 NGC, Royal mint, KM586.1, S-3665. Decimo Nono edge. Beautiful red toning along the periphery, with a strong strike and essentially no distracting marks. An ever-popular type, struck from gold originally mined by the Spanish in Lima, Peru which was subsequently captured by the British. The last time a graded example crossed the market was back in December, 2014, when Maison Palombo sold an NGC AU50 for 30,500 CHF hammer (about US$31,649 at the time). The present coin is not just technically higher grade, but has immensely more eye appeal as it lacks the somewhat distracting marks that the other example had.
Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
