Papal States. Pius IX gold 100 Lire 1869-R Year XXIV MS62 NGC, Rome mint, KM1383, Fr-278, Muntoni-38c, CNI-XVII-267. Obv. Bust left, wearing zucchetto, mozzetta, and pallium decorated with crucifixes and floral scrolls. Rev. Denomination and date in three lines within wreath. Highly reflective and lustrous surfaces, with some scattered hairlines and inconsequential contact marks. A light orange hue around the peripheries. Very rare, with a low mintage of just 450 pieces.One of the final true issues of the Papal States, as the papacy would lose its territorial holdings later in 1870, culminating with the unification of the Italian peninsula under Vittorio Emanuele II and Pius being relegated to the walls of St. Peter's. Thereafter, Pius would refer to himself as "Prisoner of the Vatican," with the modern Vatican City state being officially created in 1929.
