Tuscany (Livorno). Cosimo III Tollero 1704 MS64 PCGS, KM16.5, Dav-1498, MIR-64/19, CNI-XI-75. Obv. Crowned, draped, and armored bust right. Rev. Veduta of the port of Livorno, featuring her famous lighthouse in the foreground and fortifications in the background. An exquisite gem, featuring a most attractive old collection tone. Already a popular crown-sized issue, the splendid, yet subtle, gradient of color simply adds to its widespread appeal.Of architectural interest, the lighthouse featured upon the reverse of this piece (called the Fanale dei Pisani) was originally built by the inhabitants of nearby Pisa in 1303 upon a rock emerging from the sea. Comprised of two main embattled cylindrical constructs, the tower's distinct shape is clearly represented here. The great-grandfather of Cosimo III, Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, ordered the construction of warehouses in the tower's basement in 1584, expanding its use. The original edifice, however, was destroyed near the end of World War II in 1944 by German troops. Following the war, a new Fanale was built, according to the plans of its predecessor and even utilizing material recovered from the rubble.

Estimate: 10000-12000 USD
