Vittorio Emanuele III 5 Lire 1914-R MS65 NGC, Rome mint, KM56, Dav-144, Mont-114, Pagani-708. Obv. Uniformed bust right. Rev. Italia, in military attire, holding branch and shield, and standing left upon quadriga. Exceptional blazing luster on the obverse, with bands of a light golden tone surrounding the king's head. The reverse features a greater iridescence with subdued hues of burgundy and aquamarine. A razor sharp strike and a rare type in such a high grade. Compare to the Lissner specimen (CNG/St. James's, lot 608), which brought a hammer of 16000 USD and was graded NGC MS63.The reverse design illustrates perfectly the wonderful appeal of this coin. Each horse is caught in a different lively pose, while details such as Italia's breastplate and the chain link decoration at the base of the carriage are carefully and expertly designed. Medallic quality rarely seen on coinage is on full display with this impressive specimen.
Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
