Malta
Antonio Manoel de Vilhena gold 4 Zecchini 1723 MS61 NGC, Valletta mint, KM176, Fr-26, Restelli-10. Obv. Armored bust right. Rev. Crowned and garnished coat-of-arms. A sharp and well centered strike, as well as a lightly toned and lustrous example of this rare Maltese gold multiple. Only a few specimens of this type have crossed the auction block over the past decade, and the present coin is clearly better than the others which have sold, including the Restelli piece.Born in Lisbon to an aristocratic family, Manoel de Vilhena set himself apart from most grand masters who preceded him by forming a strong relationship with the Maltese population. Concerned with their wellbeing, he established a number of charitable organizations for his citizenry. Additionally, he oversaw the founding of a suburb of the capital at Valletta in order to provide more housing for Malta's growing population.
Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
