French Colonial gold Regulated-Counterstamp 20 Livres ND (1805) AU58 NGC, KM32, Gordon-18, Prid. pg 242, # 23. Type A "20 over eagle" Counterstamp on Imitation Brazil 1766-R 6400 Reis. 12.44g. Struck by degree dated September 26th, 1805 that specified genuine Portuguese and other whole coins of the same fineness be marked with a "22 (livres) over eagle" stamp, while fabrications of lighter weight, such as the present coin, be marked with a "20 over eagle" mark. On the present specimen, the mark has been administered as boldly as we have encountered and the surrounding imitation 6400 host is very attractively preserved, with rich orange-gold surfaces that are absent bothersome marks. A rarity in any grade, and altogether similar to the example we sold in our January 2014 ANA auction for $16,450.

Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
