Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1826 Ga-FS AU50 NGC, KM-unlisted, Unlisted in Richard Long's book, Gold Coins of the Early Mexican Republic 1823-1873, but in his book, on page 47 he says about this coin, "Utberg cataloged a 1/2E 1826 Ga FS, but it probably does not exist. We do not know his basis for the listing - perhaps a counterfeit," but it looks to have been a bit premature as Neil was from San Antonio, and this piece came up in an old estate in San Antonio. Perhaps this piece is the one Neil was talking about in his catalog. This piece has typical strike, and lettering, for the Guadalajara 1/2 Escudos. There is noticeable wear on the eagle's wings, head, and breast, with a few contact marks and some luster remaining around the periphery. We have shown images to one of the leading authorities on Mexican gold coins, and he agreed that this coin is genuine. A true "discovery" piece, absolutely Unique, and one of the rarest Mexico Republic 1/2 Escudos.
