Emergency Coinage - Batavia Crown or Real of 48 Stuivers 1645 Very Fine, KM34, Dav-415, Sch-12 (RRR), Netscher-Van der Chijs pl III, 17; Bucknill 39. 38mm/21.17g. Obverse: Upright sword with filleted laurel wreath behind; BATAVIAE ANNO 1645, around. Reverse: VOC monogram, with value above, four arabesques around and small struck countermark crown. Of the highest rarity.This first silver dollar-sized coin minted in the Orient combatted a local shortage of silver in the Dutch Indies. This piece was cast locally with the help of the Chinese who sand casted these type of coins like their Cash-coins. It was casted to a lighter standard, with the 48 Stuivers being equal in weight to seven-eighths of a Lion Daalder. In contrast to the known silver pieces that were struck (probably imitations dated a few hundred years later) the sand casted crude examples are the genuine coinage. Of course these were counterfeited too, contemporaneously as well as more recently. Drs. Arent Pol of the former Dutch Geldmuseum extensively researched the series of 12, 24 and 48 Stuivers resulting in a lecture in Teylers Museum, Haarlem The Netherlands, on 24th of November 2013, where this specimen was deemed genuine. These coins were eventually withdrawn from circulation in 1647 because of the production of many forgeries. They could be exchanged for a period of only 8 days against any European coinage from those days.One of the few genuine examples of this early trade coinage available for public ownership, and among the most important and historic coins that we have had the pleasure to offer.
