Charles II gold Cob 4 Escudos 1700 L-H MS62 NGC, Lima mint, KM25. From the 1715 Plate Fleet. 22mm/13.5g. Rare quality for this rare type; boldly struck on a round flan with sparkling luster in the fields and attractive orange-gold color on both sides. Few marks are seen, and the only contributing factors to the grade are several small edge splits that resulted from striking and centering that is good, but short of perfect. Certainly comparable in many respects to the finest known example from the Eric Newman Collection that we sold for $41,125 in our January 2014 offering of that collection. With the present coin's pedigree to the 1715 Plate Fleet, we can only expect similar collector enthusiasm for this also-premium example of this highly coveted type.
Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
