Elizabeth I copper Pattern Novodel 5 Kopecks 1757 AU58 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, cf. Brekke-110, cf. Bitkin-590. 47.7g/45mm. Obv. St. Petersburg arms. Rev. Crossed hooks with imperial eagle scepter on top. A very rare later striking or "Novodel" of the famous Elizabeth I pattern, of which Brekke reports only two original examples; one is in the collection of the Hermitage, while the other is in the collection of the Grand Duke George Mikhailovich. Minor variations of the dies exist on this piece, with the scepter having an extra center oval and the berries in the wreath showing different placement. Obviously showing significant age, this example was likely a 19th century creation to help fill a hole in a collector's cabinet. Today, the same logic applies, and for the collector looking to acquire an example of this design, this wholly pleasing NGC-graded example is very likely as good as it gets.

Estimate: 13000-16000 USD
