João V gold 12800 Reis 1732-R AU Details (Scratch) PCGS, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM148, Russo-227b. Partially lustrous with only slight high-point wear and two pinscratches to the right of the bust accounting for the designation and no . Rather than a "West Indies Imitation" as stated in the slab, a genuine 12800 Reis clipped (hence the cut outward legends) with false edge reapplied for circulation in the West Indies or North America. A rather common occurrence in the 6400 Reis denomination, the contemporary clipping is very rarely found on the Dobra or 12800 Reis, with the ex-Roehrs coin later regulated by Joseph Richardson (Heritage Auctions 8/2010, lot 21362 for $120,000!) the only such noted example by the cataloguer. A most interesting coin with broad appeal due to its multiple historical connections.
Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
