The Dutch Republic. Undated, but 1592. Medal (Silver, 58mm, 57.50 g 12), satirical medal on the peace negotiations carried out by the Spanish under the Baron de Reydt; by an unknown engraver. CANES.NOSTRVM.NON.DECIPIT.ARGVM / NON.TEMERE / CREDENDVM (= the sweet song of the flute does not deceive our Argus; don't believe too easily) The shepherd Argus, seated left, his back against a tree, gazing at Mercury who sits playing a flute before him; behind Argus, cow and sheep. Rev. (rosette)ADVERSVS. INNIXVM.VLTRO.SESE.ERIGIT.PONDVS / FRVSTRA CO-NATVR (= it resists the weight they want to put on him; the effort is in vain) Scene of a group of soldiers and churchmen who try to tear down a plaque labeled PRIVI/LEGI from a palm tree. Fieweger 755. PiN 29 (this piece). Van Loon pp. 421-422. Rare and attractive, with lovely old toning. Some areas of flatness in the legends, otherwise, extremely fine.
