The Dutch Republic. Holland. 1596. Medal (Silver, 55mm, 28.76 g 12), on the reopening of Dutch maritime commerce; by an unknown engraver. (rosette)SIDERE PROFICIANT DEXTRO NEPTVNIA REGNA (=may Neptune's kingdoms prosper under fortunate stars) Name of Jehovah in clouds over a scene of shipping, with Neptune riding a sea-monster to left in the foreground; in the exergue, 1596. Rev. INSIGNIA FRISIÆ CIS RHENANÆ (=the arms of Frisia on this side of the Rhine) Crowned shield with lion supporters bearing the arms of Frisia; around, shields bearing the arms pf the cities of Alkmaer, Hoorn, Enckhusen, Medenblick, Edam, Monicedam and Purmerent (each accompanied by the name on an open scroll). Betts 16. Van Loon I, pp. 477-478. Very rare and with attractive, old toning. Good very fine.

This medal, as catalogued by Betts, is taken to be a precursor for "the Dutch colonies in India, Brazil and St. Thomas": a clearly inferior example, in the Adams collection (Heritage, 9-14 January 2013, 3560), sold for no less than $ 1l,750!
