The Dutch Republic. Medal (Silver, 50mm, 46.05 g 12), on the Battle of Turnhout, won by Maurice of Orange against the Spaniards, 1597. DEO.OPT.MAX. (=to God best and greatest) Military trophy affixed to a lance before a map of the land of the area between the Ems, Rhine and Meuse rivers, including the names of all the towns taken by the Dutch forces (Alpen, Berg, Mörs, Brefort, Grolle, Goer, Enschede, Lingen, Oldenzaal and Ootmarsum). Rev. In nine lines: SIGNIS/AD TVRNHOVT/NOVEM ET TRIGINTA/POST OPPIDIS TRANS/RHENVM TRIBVS/CIS SEX HISPANO/ TRIMESTRI EREPTIS // CI? I? XCVII / S.C. (=thirty-nine standards taken at Turnhout, afterwards, three cities beyond the Rhine and six on this side captured from the Spaniards in three months; 1597 by order of the senate). MI I, p. 168, 157.
