China
Kwangtung. Empire silver Pattern 50 Cents ND (1889) MS62 PCGS, Heaton mint, L&M-197, Kann-17, KM-Y197. An extremely rare specimen of this first Kwangtung pattern series, featuring a reversed legend from the later circulating type with English around the Manchu characters and a heavier weight, detailed as 3 mace and 6-1/2 candareens. One of very few examples of this issue certified by either PCGS or NGC, and entirely lovely for the designation. Both sides are lightly toned with variegated shades of gold, maroon and blue-green tone confirming originality. The strike is essentially full, with all the design elements being complete, with only trivial handling that blends into the surfaces preventing a finer grade. One of the most important issues of modern China, and for the privileged collector that has great pride in the history of Chinese coinage, a relic that will undoubtedly hold an exalted place in their cabinet.
