*France, The Kings of France from Pharamond to Louis XVIII, a set of silver medals depicting French rulers from AD 417 to 1715 (Pharamond to Louis XIV) by Thomas Bernard as well as the continuing medals from the same set depicting Louis XV by Gatteaux, Louis XVI by Duvivier, Louis XVII by Gayrard and Louis XVIII by Depaulis, each medal approximately 32mm in diameter and numbered consecutively from 1 to 69, together with the unnumbered initial explanatory medal, in mint state and arranged on six blue card trays (with empty spaces for the last two medals of the complete set) which fit into a red case (20cm wide x 15cm deep x 4cm high), the interior of the lid lined with blue silk and with "no. 11" in black ink on the upper part of the lid (70 medals). Ex Sotheby's sale entitled Noblesse Oblige, 14 April 2011, lot 155. Although unsigned the medals up to the reign of Louis XIV are referred to by Forrer, BDM volume I, as the work of Jean Dassier but this attribution was then corrected by him in the Supplementary volume VII where he noted that they were engraved by the medallist Thomas Bernard. The present set differs slightly from those listed by Forrer and contains two examples of medal no. 6 (thus omitting no. 7, the medal of Clotaire I). It would appear that this set was assembled around the date of the latest medal, 1815, as it lacks the last two medals from the series, those of Charles X and Louis Philippe I. The condition of the medals is exceptional. (3000 - 4000)
