*French School, 17th century, Philippe Desportes (1546-c. 1610), poet and author, oval uniface bronze medal, bust right, 60mm x 40mm, very fine with stippled fields, edge filed [ex Clifford collection]. Cast after a medal signed by G.P., possibly for Giovanni Paolo, an Italian medallist working in France in the early 17th century (see Jones, BMC I, 163 and for a contemporary cast see Sotheby's, 12 July 1993, lot 44).
