NEW ZEALAND. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand. 10 Shillings, 1934. P-154. PCGS Very Choice New 64. Serial Number 1.
This is a highly significant item and arguably the most important banknote known to exist for all of New Zealand. It traces its pedigree directly back to A.D. Park. Park was the Secretary of the Treasury from 1929-1935. He was presented the note by the Directors of the Reserve Bank when these notes were first issued in 1934.
These ten shilling notes feature a kiwi and a Maori chief and are quite rare in AU condition or better. This would be a valuable note just for its condition alone. However, the serial number Z000001 moves the note into a category where it isn't just a rare collectible item, it is also a tangible piece of New Zealand's financial history.
As a comparable sale, Australia's first commonwealth issued banknote, a 1913 ten shillings note, last traded hands privately in 2008 for 1.8 million AUD (according to The Sydney Morning Herald). So our estimate here of just $50,000 to $100,000 USD could be extremely conservative.
