Elis, Olympia; 270s-260s BC, Stater, 11.96g. Seltman-232, obv. die DC, but new rev. die. Not in BCD Olympia or BCD Peloponnesos. Obv: Laureate head of Zeus r. Rx: Eagle standing r., wings closed, between thunderbolt to l. and coiled serpent to r. Ex Evans Sale, Lucerne 1934 according to the coin's old French ticket, but not in the printed catalogue of that sale, Ars Classica XVII. Apparently from an unpublished reverse die.As shown by an original ticket, this coin was in the Arthur J. Evans collection, but not in the catalog. In the 1974 Kuntzfreund sale a few hundred coins were in the auction, but another thousand or so were sold privately. This also happened with the Evan's collection. The head of Zeus on this coin is one of the finest dies of Zeus, especially of this late period. While the obverse die is in Seltmann, the reverse die is not. EF
