Lucania, Sybaris AR Triobol. Circa 453 BC. Poseidon advancing right, holding trident; VM to right / Bird (thrush?) standing right within wreath. SNG ANS 859; SNG Oxford 855; SNG Lockett 446. 1.07g, 10mm, 2h.

Very Fine. Very Rare.

C. Kraay, in 'The Coinage of Sybaris after 510 BC' (NC 1958, 23-24), identified the bird as a thrush and the symbol of the former colony of Laos. This rare emission would then probably be associated with the founding of Sybaris III around 453 BC.
