Gold "Finger Bar" from the "Golden Fleece" Wreck ND (c.1550), marked .X.X for Fineness (19.5kt), 7.6 inches (193 mm) long x .8 inches wide(20.3mm) x .5 inches high (12.7mm), weight 567.7gm. This bar is uncleaned, with some marine incrustation, and coral, still attached, otherwise the bar is quite nice, with four purity stamps. There were only a few full gold bars found on this wreck and most of the gold bullion was in the manner of cut fragments of bars. The "Golden Fleece" is the second earliest "New World" shipwreck to yield treasure bars, and the first to yield true gold bars. This wreck was nicknamed for a Royal stamping of the Golden Fleece on a few of the gold bars. Except for a few extremely rare Santo Domingo pieces, all of the coins from this wreck were Mexico Carlos & Johana silver coins, of virtually all assayers (except S), including several very rare coins. This wreck produced the only known three pieces of Rincon early series 8 Reales, the first 8 Reales struck in the New World. All we know of the location of this wreck is that is was found in the northern Caribbean area. Most of the Carlos & Johana coins on the market, for the last few years, originated with this wreck.
