UMAYYAD: 'Abd al-Malik, 685-705, AR dirham (2.92g), Balkh, AH82, A-126, Klat--, Zeno-167039 (this piece), slightly bungled calligraphy, identical to the style of the Tukharistan AH80 dirham (Zeno-137100), and not that different from the style of the relatively nearby mint of Marw struck AH 79-84, unique, choice EF, RRRR. This piece was previously listed as AH87 in Morton & Eden Auction 79, Lot 36, but there are many reasons to read the date as 82, not 87, including the similarly to the Tukharistan 80 dirham - Balkh was the capital city of the region of Tukharistan. It should also be noted that all eastern mints were closed upon the opening of the new mint at Wasit in AH84, with a number of mints occasionally operating in the Caucasus and Jazira regions during the years AH85-89 (Dabil, Arran, Tiflis & Harran, plus a few unlocated mints, such as al-Dasakir), and of course the prolific mint of Dimashq. Local eastern mints were reopened in AH90, though mostly closed again in AH98 or shortly thereafter.

Estimate: 10,000-12,000 GBP
