BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (5), 1787, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thick oak wreath, two inner leaves over head between acorns, acorn in centre of wreath one leaf below line of mouth, acorn at point of hood (2), rev P M Co cypher, 1787, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY, straight 1 and 7, 1 under first limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 63); rev 1 under foot of Y of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 66); obv three inner leaves over head between acorns, acorn outside wreath over point of hood, rev 1 between N and Y of PENNY (Atkins p.266, 44; D&H Anglesey 68); obv acorn over point of hood is in centre of wreath (2), rev 1 between N and Y of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 70); rev 1 just to right of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 70bis). D&H 63 with the remains of "26" lightly inked into the left obverse field, otherwise extremely fine, D&H 66 with small scrape, otherwise good extremely fine, D&H 68 from a late state of the reverse die, better than extremely fine and with a little red casting wax adhering, D&H 70 extremely fine, D&H 70bis with edge knocks, otherwise fair, D&H 63 and 70 very rare, D&H 70bis extremely rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
