BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (2), 1787, both edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thick oak wreath, five inner leaves overhead between acorns, acorn to point of hood, rev P M Co cypher, 1787, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY, straight 1 and 7, 1 under foot of Y of PENNY, 7 under WE (Atkins p.267, 47; D&H Anglesey 73); obv four inner leaves over head between the acorns, no acorn at point of hood, rev 1 under second limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 73bis). D&H 73 from an early state of the fractured obverse die, good extremely fine with faded colour remaining and very rare, D&H 73bis good extremely fine and exceedingly rare. (2)

Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
