BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (4), 1788, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty-five acorns in wreath, no spur at point of bust, acorn at point of hood, four acorns at tie, rev P M Co cypher, 1788, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY within a border of acorns, curved 1 and straight 7, 1 between N and Y of PENNY, second 8 under W of WE (D&H Anglesey 190bis); obv no stem to last leaf on left, spur at point of bust, rev 1 just to right of second limb of second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 194); obv stem of last leaf springs from side of leaf, no spur at point of bust, rev second 8 under second downstroke of W of WE (D&H Anglesey 196); obv spur at point of bust, second acorn on left outside of wreath above base of bust (D&H Anglesey 197). D&H 190bis with scattered marks, otherwise nearly very fine, D&H 194 with surface marks and scrapes, otherwise fine, D&H 196 nearly good extremely fine, D&H 197 very fine, D&H 194 and 197 very rare, D&H 190bis and 196 exceedingly rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
