BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, WALES, Parys Mine Company,Thomas Williams, (1737-1802), attorney and businessman, part owner and managing partner of the Parys and Mona Mine Companies of Anglesey, Copper Penny (5), 1788, all edge ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY, obv Druid's head left within thin oak wreath and outer border of acorns, twenty-four acorns in wreath, last leaf stem on left springs from the end of leaf, spur on right inside leaf stem under bust, rev P M Co cypher, 1788, WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY within a border of acorns, straight 1 and 7, 1 just to right of second limb of second N of PENNY, second 8 under second downstroke of W of WE, upper loop of C of PMCo points just to right of foot of P of PROMISE (2) (D&H Anglesey 233); obv last leaf stem on left springs from the end of leaf, spur on right inside leaf stem under bust (Atkins p.271, 105; D&H Anglesey 234); obv no spur on right inside leaf stem under bust, acorn slightly above point of hood, rev 1 between N and Y of PENNY, upper loop of C of PMCo points between P and R of PROMISE (D&H Anglesey 236); obv spurs on inside leaf stems either side of bust, rev 1 under centre of the second N of PENNY (D&H Anglesey 237); obv acorns to right end in a single, rev 1 just to right of second limb of second N of PENNY (Atkins p.271, 108; D&H Anglesey 238). D&H 233 with contact marks and a little detritus, otherwise extremely fine, D&H 234 nearly good extremely fine, D&H 236 with light brush marks and with reflective surfaces, good extremely fine, D&H 237 with graffiti "I + M 1799" carved into the obverse, otherwise very fine, D&H 238 good extremely fine; D&H 236 and 238 rare, D&H 234 very rare, D&H 233 and 237 exceptionally rare. Williams effectively gained control of the entire operations of the Parys Mountain and, later, the Cornish Metal Company, giving him a near monopoly over the development and production of copper and the copper trade in Great Britain.
