BRITISH 18TH CENTURY TOKENS, SCOTLAND, Matthew Denton, (1771-1838), publisher and coin dealer, Hospital Gate and 139 St Johns Street, West Smithfield, Specious Copper Halfpenny, 1797, obv an ancient fortress, wreath of leaves around, rev J B cypher, ABERDEEN TOKEN 1797 around, edge plain (Conder p.10, 1; Virt p.181; Atkins p.293, 1; D&H Aberdeenshire 1). Struck over a copy of a Wilkinson Halfpenny, a few spots on the reverse, otherwise better than extremely fine with a bit of faded colour remaining, extremely rare.
