Guatemala, cob 8 reales, 1753J, with small heart countermark. Host: S-G1a; CT-285; KM-12. 26.80 grams. Typically rectangular flan with full pillars design, bold mintmark, tops of digits of date, off-center shield with full crown, bold assayer and clear denomination, holed near edge as usual but nicely old-toned and higher grade than most (VF), also with tiny heart-shaped countermark with three raised dots inside it that is centered on the shield side, probably a private mark from the West Indies in the late 1700s (also known on a Potosi 2R and a contemporary counterfeit 1/2R, both dated 1772), very clearly old and well crafted. Pedigreed to our Auction #11, with original lot-tag #877. ($250-375)
