ENGLAND. Edward I, 1272-1307 AD. AR Groat (3.70 gm) of London. Crown bust facing / Long Cross with pellets in angles. S.1379c. Fox.3. Toned VF. This first English Groat is part of the coinage reform of 1279 which brought in the solid Long Cross penny and struck farthings and half pennies. The most daring change was this large four penny Groat likely issued to compete with the popular Gros Tournois of St Louis of France. The English Goat proved to be unpopular under Edward I with most surviving examples gilded and mounted as brooches. Extremely Rare, especially so surviving without gilding and mounting. ex.
