Caius Antony AR Denarius. Military mint moving with Caius, 43 BC. [C•]ANTONIVS•M•F•PRO•COS, draped female bust right, wearing causia / Two cululli and axe; PONTIFEX below. Crawford 484/1; RBW 1699. 3.64g, 17mm, 9h.

Near Very Fine, banker's mark on obverse, attractive deep old cabinet tone. Found in the UK, 2016. Extremely Rare and of great historical interest.

Caius Antony, the younger brother of Marc Antony, was appointed Praetor of Macedon following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, despite the region being under the control of Brutus. Caius set out for Macedonia, where he was subsequently blockaded in the port of Apollonia and eventually captured and taken prisoner after Brutus was able to convince Caius' armies to defect to his side. The execution of the Republican orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, during the proscriptions of the triumvirate seemingly resulted in the execution of Caius prior to the battle of Philippi.

The coinage of Caius Antony is limited to this single denarius, struck prior to his capture while en-route to Macedonia or during the blockade at Apollonia. That this coin was found in Sweffling, Suffolk in 2016 is particularly extraordinary and suggests that it was widely circulated following the struggles between the factions of the Caesarians and Optimates in Macedonia. Indeed, this extremely rare coin of the imperatorial series is significantly the first to be found in the United Kingdom and seldom appears on the market.
