Globe between four wreaths, the lower one flanked by aplustre and ear of corn, the upper jewelled and tied with fillet. Cr. 426/4b. B. (Cornelia) 62. AR. g. 4.20 mm. 20.00 R. Rare and superb. Overweight flan. Lightly toned. About EF/EF. This moneyer was the son of the famous dictator, L. Sulla Felix, the rival of Marius. He married Pompey's daughter. The head of Hercules recalls that Pompey while still young had, like this hero, extended his conquest over the world. The three lower wreaths refer to the three triumphal wreaths granted to Pompey for his victories in three continents. The jewelled wreath above is the gold chaplet which he was authorized to wear at public functions. (D. R. Sear, 'RSC', 1978, p. 40.).
